There are many types of bumpers out there and several ideas on how to build them.
Here are a few that the Desert Rats use.

You are in control when pushing, keep your eye on the car and you won’t ride over a wheel (shelfing). Be careful at all times and that shouldn’t happen.

This is every push truck driver’s nightmare. This happened in California at Perris Speedway in 2008. We don’t know exactly what caused this, but we do know from experience that the bumper rode up and over the tire.

I like a short width bumper. Mine is 34-inch wide x 17-inches high and 8-inches off the ground and built with 1.5 x 1.5 square tubing.

I use an old conveyor belt to protect the ¾-inch wood, others use an old tire, and some only use paint, a lot of paint. What ever you choose it will be cheaper and easier than replacing the wood.
Others like a full width bumper.

Remember when building your bumper that you want to protect your truck and grill. Make a loop that will protect them and don’t block your headlights or running lights.

The one thing that all of these bumpers have in common is … They are securely mounted. There is a lot of pressure applied while pushing a sprint car, plus it will not be the only type of car you push. You could push a Lady Stock, Factory Stock, Bomber Stock, Super Stock, Modified, Sport Modifieds, Midgets, Mini Sprint, Dwarfs and Mod Lites, just to name a few
